All these talented men and women are wastefully transformed into bitter mandarins. If asked, they would welcome the suggestion of letting Adam Smith's invisible hand manipulate oranges and brie. If asked, they would eagerly apply their skills to creating a rational system of checks and balances in Europe. If asked, they would gladly make history instead of paper. But no one asks.
