29 11 97 L'essenziale delle news ogni mattina sul vostro pc English version _________________________ COVER STORY _________________________ THANKSGIVING John Steinbeck said of turkeys: "To know them is not to admire them, for they are vain and hysterical. They gather in vulnerable groups and then panic at rumors." (John Steinbeck, Travels with Charley in search of America - 1961). For years, the Asian nation that shares its English name with the tasty, flightless bird has campaigned to become known as Turkye - which is its name in Turkish. Pronunciation: Tuer-key-ay. Even allowing for the unflattering association with the guest that lies on its back on the platters of America, there is something third-worldly, if you pardon the word, about such initiatives: one doesn't see Japan campaigning for Nippon or Germany insisting on Deutschland; even Greece, not the least nationalistic country around, has given up on forcing Hellas on everyone - not to mention the Skopje-Macedonia fiasco. Since Turkye wishes to enter the European Union (EU), why doesn't Ankara's government concentrate on worthier changes, such as dropping genocidal policies (against Kurds at present: those against Armenians and Greeks have ended, now that millions are dead), or granting its citizens civil and religious liberties that, at least on paper, Europeans enjoy by right? Take tomorrow's census: since they are to be counted, all Turks have been ordered home from 5 in the morning to 7 in the evening! Such practices are dictatorial and laughably primitive: a government that doesn't trust it people to lift a hand and say ėhere' ought to be recalled by any means. Mustafa Kemal, who dragged Turkye kicking and screaming into the twentieth century, ought to be rolling in his hallowed grave. Turkye accuses the EU of being a white Christian club. But this darker, Muslim nation absurdly demands rights and concessions it is not willing to give in return. Still in the twentieth century while others are busy preparing for the next, Turkye is kicking and screaming at its own people.
